Condo Renovations: Tricks and Tips
Renovations in a condominium have their own limitations and strategies. The whole process is different from house renos.
First of all (and the important one) is knowing the rules of your building. Check with your property management what policies are in place for renovations. They let you know what materials you can use for your project, what days and time you allow to work, any logistic limitations such as elevators booking and using side doors to bring material. It’s better to check in advance even before you find a contractor to start your renovation project.
Another thing to know is who you’re renovating your apartment for. If you’re planning to rent it out or sell it’s better to keep any changes simple, don’t add any extraordinary elements that could push away any potential buyers or tenants.
Don’t forget to check all construction limits that could affect your design ideas. Cement ceiling wouldn’t let you drill extra light fixtures, but you could build a drop-ceiling to make some extra pot lights. You could keep major changes such as new kitchen cabinets and a bathroom vanity in white color but add some personal accents with details that you could change later in case of selling property.
Changing the color of one wall or adding some bright decorations that show your individuality and make the place more comfortable for you. Later, once you decide to move out, you could easily repaint walls into neutral colors.
It’s better to stay somewhere else during the major renovation. Many condominiums have guest apartments that you could use and stay close to your place to control any steps of the project.
